It’s going to be hard for anyone in Broncos Country to temper their excitement in regard to first-round rookie Bo Nix, especially after everything we heard about the 12th overall selection after this past week’s rookie minicamp.
“Location of throws,” Payton said when asked what impressed him about Nix’s play. “He had two or three down-the-field throws today. It’s almost like watching a good golfer. Sometimes when you watch his game over two years, there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out and — I don’t want to use the term boring, that’s not the right term — but pretty good decisions with each play. The efficiency with how he’s operating. All of that.”
On top of that, Nix has looked every bit like the pro-ready prospect Payton hoped he would.
“It’s been exactly what we saw,” Payton remarked. “The only thing I can think about that was a little bit of a surprise is when we went to work him out privately and stood around him, he was bigger than I expected. But nothing in the last two days. He’s doing well.”
Bo Nix is also saying all the right things in regard to his studying of the playbook.
“It’s all about studying,” Nix said. “It’s all about taking one play at a time, mastering it, make sure you know the fundamentals and technique of that play, what the play-caller’s intent is, and essentially, they just want to see you go out there and execute it. It’s my job as the quarterback to get the play started and get the ball where it’s supposed to be . . . It can be a lot, but I feel like I’m being taught really well by the coaches. They’re doing a really good job of narrowing everything down and making it simple so I can just get up there and process and play fast.”
Then, as the cherry on top, Bo Nix gave Broncos Country some warm and fuzzy feelings when he discussed what he means to him to be a member of the Denver Broncos.
“I’m super excited to be here. The city is incredible,” Nix said. “I can’t believe I get to wear a Broncos jersey and go out there and do what so many greats have done before me. I don’t take that lightly and I’m not going to take it for granted. Pressure gives you opportunities. The more pressure and responsibility you have, the more you have to go out there and consistently earn it.”
With talk like this, it’s going to be hard to be patient waiting for training camp.
